Is there a way to free yourself from the tyranny of endless choice that afflicts all documentary directors? Is there a way to increase the emotional drama of your films, and also shoot much less material? And is there a way to make your proposal stand out from the thousands of others that flood the desks of funders?
Yes there is.
Join dual Emmy award-winning director Geoffrey Smith for an intense two-day workshop to find the beating heart of your film, and to draw the most clarity, emotion, and drama from your story. Whatever the style or type of your doc, we will work together to discover which universal Story archetype best reflects your characters and ideas, and then use that to transform your thinking, your shoot, and your edit.
Story archetypes are the single most powerful tool you will ever use.
DETAILS
Each workshop is across two days, and to give participants a range of dates there will be three separate workshops held in September.
Workshop 1
• Day 1: Monday 8 Sept
• Day 2: Tuesday 9 Sept
Workshop 2
• Day 1: Thursday 18 Sept
• Day 2: Friday 19 Sept
Workshop 3
• Day 1: Monday 22 Sept
• Day 2: Tuesday 23 Sept
Each 2 day workshop will be for 6 creative teams, with up to 3 participants in each team (director, producer, and writer or editor for example).
Project types best suited to the workshop are feature documentaries and limited documentary series where characters are allowed to develop rather than conform to a script. All lengths and genres are welcome. Personal docs, investigative docs, and even some historical docs are also well suited to the workshop. Highly formatted and scripted shows will not benefit to the same degree.

APPLICATION
Please apply to workshop@eyelinefilms.co.uk by 5pm August 25th and include the following:
A one to two-page project overview, including a short and long synopsis or story outline.
A summary of your main character(s). The workshop is most effective when your character(s) are people you know well, as Story archetypes work best when rooted in real-world emotion and psychology.
Indicate your first and second choice workshops and whether you’re available for all three. Places are limited and will be allocated based on the suitability of the project and the potential benefit to the applicant.
There is a $25 attendance fee.
